Kenkubui unveiled his third single, Mɔzɔlawo (Travellers), on Tuesday, September 15, marking his debut in the Borborbor Fusion genre.
The track, described by the artist as a reflection on the brevity of life, speaks to how quickly people pass through the world. “No one is on earth forever. It is a sensitive topic most people are not willing to talk about, but the truth, is we are all just passing through,” Kenkubui told listeners.
He added that the song’s message is meant to inspire people to use their time wisely, choosing peace and unity over hatred and envy. “Someone saw my flyer and asked if it was a good morning message. It scared him, but I told him it is not a song about death. It is a reminder that no one is here forever, so we should leave behind hate, envy, greed and selfishness,” he stated.
The artist also noted that exploring Borborbor Fusion is a personal journey tied to his Ewe roots. “Borborbor Fusion is a form of traditional music that connects me to the roots of my culture. I feel it is a spiritual journey I cannot run away from. It has always been within me, and I’m happy I’ve finally found a space where I can express it,” Kenkubui said.
Mɔzɔlawo represents a new phase in his musical career, with Kenkubui saying he is shifting from seeking attention to conveying his truth. “I’ve moved from wanting to be heard to wanting to be understood. My focus here isn’t a hit song. It is my truth and the realities of life that need to be heard,” he added.
