Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Yakubu Mohammed, has issued an unqualified apology after a viral video showing him telling a schoolgirl visiting Parliament that he would marry her sparked widespread public condemnation.
In an official statement released on Friday, July 31, 2026, the lawmaker acknowledged that his remarks were inappropriate regardless of his intentions and expressed deep regret over the incident.
'Inappropriate Because It Involved a Child'
The controversy stemmed from a parliamentary visit by pupils of The Citadel School, located in the Sagnarigu Constituency. In the circulating video, the MP was seen telling one of the young girls: "You are very beautiful; when you grow up, I will marry you, so she is my wife."
Explaining the context of his remarks, Mr. Mohammed clarified that his words were rooted in long-standing traditional banter between the Mossi and Dagomba ethnic groups, as he is Mossi addressing members of the Dagomba community.
However, he conceded that cultural context does not excuse the comment when a minor is involved.
"The comment was not intended to cause harm, disrespect, embarrassment or discomfort to the pupil, her family, the school authorities, the Dagomba community or the general public," the MP stated.
"Irrespective of my intention or the traditional context in which the statement was made, the comment was inappropriate because it involved a child."
Recommitment to Child Protection
Apologizing directly to all affected parties, the lawmaker pledged to adhere to higher standards of public conduct.
"I sincerely regret my choice of words and render my unreserved and unqualified apology to the relevant authorities, the school authorities, the pupil, her parents and family, and the general public," he added.
Mr. Mohammed noted that he fully recognizes the heightened responsibility attached to his role as a public officer and Member of Parliament, reaffirming his dedication to protecting the rights, dignity, and welfare of children across the country.
The formal apology follows intense social media backlash and sharp criticism from human rights and child advocacy groups who warned that such comments from public officials sexualize minors and reinforce harmful gender stereotypes.
