Cambodia Residents Petition Tema West Assembly to Demolish Amadia Warehouse

The Cambodia Residents Association has petitioned the Tema West Municipal Assembly to demolish a warehouse belonging to Amadia Shopping Centre, alleging that it was constructed on a waterway and is contributing to flooding in the area.

The residents claim a major drainage channel was filled to make way for the warehouse, obstructing the flow of stormwater and worsening flooding in the community.

Presenting the petition to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema West, Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the convenor of the association, Adib Saani, said residents were also facing poor drainage systems and deteriorating roads, which were affecting commercial activities in the area.

According to the petition, the obstruction near the Toyota Roundabout, where portions of a major drainage channel were allegedly filled to facilitate the warehouse’s construction, is a key cause of flooding in the community.

“Since the construction, we have observed that stormwater drainage has slowed significantly, leading to disastrous floods. So we are calling for the Amadia Company Limited, which was built on the waterway, to be demolished,” Mr Saani said.

Responding to the concerns, Mr Totimeh acknowledged the residents’ grievances and pledged the Assembly’s support in addressing the issues.

He said the Assembly would constitute a joint inspection team comprising its officials and representatives of the residents to assess the situation and determine the appropriate measures to resolve the concerns.
