UG Urges Students to Suspend Planned Protest Over 26% Accommodation Fee Hike

The University of Ghana has urged organisers of a planned demonstration over a 26% increase in accommodation fees to suspend the protest, as Management engages them to address their concerns.

The Concerned Students’ Movement of the University of Ghana announced plans to demonstrate on Monday, November 2, demanding a reduction in the revised charges, refunds for students who have already paid and greater transparency in decisions affecting accommodation costs.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 28, the Dean of Student Affairs, Rosina Kyerematen, said Management had engaged the group and assured them of its commitment to addressing students’ immediate, medium‑term and long‑term needs, including accommodation.

The university said the organisers had been advised to suspend the planned protest while discussions with Management and other stakeholders continued.

The proposed demonstration follows a 26% increase in accommodation fees at university halls and facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL).

The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has also urged students and student groups to use established channels to resolve grievances in accordance with the university’s regulations for junior members.

It added that it was working with the Student Financial Aid Office and the Careers and Counselling Directorate to provide welfare support and help maintain a peaceful learning environment.
