The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) announced a nationwide 8% increase in public transport fares effective Saturday, September 26, 2026. The updated schedule details new prices for shared taxis, intra‑city trotros and inter‑city services.
Under the revised intra‑city fare structure, the standard rate will rise from GH¢5 to GH¢5.50, while the GH¢10 fare will increase to GH¢11. At the higher end, a GH¢30 journey will cost GH¢32.40 and the top listed fare of GH¢34 will jump to GH¢36.80.
Shared taxi fares will also climb: trips up to four kilometres will go from GH¢2.60 to GH¢2.90, and journeys up to 40 kilometres will rise from GH¢18.70 to GH¢20.20.
Inter‑city fares are set to increase as well. A trip that currently costs GH¢25 will now be GH¢27, a GH¢100 journey will become GH¢108, and the highest listed fare of GH¢300 will move to GH¢324.
Both unions said the adjustment reflects higher ex‑pump petrol prices, increased spare‑parts and vehicle maintenance costs, and other operational expenses. They noted that government intervention on diesel prices helped moderate the rise.
Operators are required to display the approved fare schedule at loading terminals and stations, and those who charge above the sanctioned rates will face sanctions from the unions.
Commuters should be prepared for the new rates starting September 26, 2026, and transport operators are urged to comply with the updated schedule.
