Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga handed over four dispatch motorcycles to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) today, a move aimed at reinforcing Aayalolo’s contraflow operations as passenger traffic is set to surge during the Christmas season.
Speaking at the handover, Ayariga said the new bikes would help tackle logistical bottlenecks, especially the shortage of dispatch riders required to guide Aayalolo buses through congested roads. “The number of trips will increase as we approach Christmas. In many of the areas, they do three batches of movements, and each batch of buses moving will need one dispatch rider leading,” he explained.

The minister also revealed that the government is procuring marked pickup vehicles to further support the contraflow exercise, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama. “The President has directed that we add pickups, marked pickups, so we are in the process of procuring the marked pickups to support the exercise,” Ayariga added.

He expressed confidence that the additional resources would improve operational efficiency and minimise disruptions. Motorists were urged to exercise caution, particularly between 6 am and 9 am and 4 pm and 8 pm, when Aayalolo buses run the contraflow system.
What to watch: The government will continue to equip MTTD with more vehicles as the holiday period approaches, with the goal of ensuring smooth transit for commuters across the capital.
