The Ghanaian government has announced a GHS 153.9 million ($10 million) investment to place the Visit Ghana logo on Sunderland’s Premier League shirt. The deal, which will see the logo emblazoned on the team’s kit for the 2026‑27 season, has ignited a national conversation about the merits of high‑profile marketing versus tangible economic return.

Supporters of the partnership argue that the exposure will reach millions of football fans in England and beyond, potentially driving tourism, airline and hotel partnerships, and cultural exchanges. Critics, however, warn that visibility alone does not guarantee arrivals and that the funds could be better spent on infrastructure, visitor centres or hospitality training.

“If the £10 million partnership generates measurable benefits such as flights, hotel bookings, investment and jobs, it could be valuable,” said a tourism analyst. “If not, Ghana risks spending on a billboard that brings little more than brand awareness.”

Experts point to Rwanda’s experience, noting that the country’s success came from coupling football sponsorship with a broader economic strategy that included travel packages and destination promotion. They caution that Ghana must avoid simply buying advertising and instead create a comprehensive platform that turns curiosity into bookings.

Questions remain about cost, duration, expected returns and accountability measures. The government has yet to publish detailed targets or a clear return‑on‑investment framework for the campaign.

As the partnership moves forward, stakeholders will watch to see whether the shirt becomes a catalyst for genuine tourism growth or a costly marketing exercise. The next steps will involve outlining measurable outcomes and ensuring transparency for taxpayers who will ultimately foot the bill.
