Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney has dismissed claims that FIFA is planning major reforms, saying the organisation’s president’s recent letter does not call for sweeping changes to the governing body.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino sent a letter to the FIFA Council and all national associations outlining an independent review of how the world football governing body operates, stating that the process would "recommend potential improvements". Mooney said the letter focused on reforming strategic projects and initiatives, not on changing FIFA itself.
Infantino has faced mounting pressure over his aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which would have involved selling stakes in the World Cup and other competitions to private investors. The Welsh governing body was among the first national associations to withdraw support for Infantino’s bid to continue his leadership.
Mooney reiterated that the FAW would not endorse Infantino’s candidature for a fourth term in March 2027. "With the FIFA president, you’re looking for a moral guardian of the game," he told BBC Radio Wales Phone In. "You’re not looking for somebody to sell off parts of the game. The World Cup does not need private equity. They have billions and billions of dollars in reserve. Give us the money. Let us build the pitches. You've got loads of reserves. Let us have it as soon as possible."
Infantino will stand for election again in March 2027, with opponents having until 18 November to nominate an alternative candidate.
