Christian Eriksen has departed VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, concluding a year‑long stint with the German club that began in 2023.
The 34‑year‑old, whose contract was set to run until June 2027, has not played since a collapse during Denmark’s friendly with Ukraine in September 2023.
Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in 2021 during a European Championship match, said he wanted to be closer to family in Denmark. “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” he added.
He reflected on his time in Wolfsburg, noting both highs and lows, and expressed confidence in the club’s future as it aims for promotion back to the Bundesliga. “My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead,” he said.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent after leaving Manchester United and made 34 appearances for the club. The 151‑cap Danish international has previously played for Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford.
Wolfsburg’s managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, confirmed the decision was Eriksen’s and praised his impact on teammates, staff and fans. “It was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract,” Hecking said.
With the contract terminated, Eriksen is free to pursue opportunities that allow him to remain near his family while he recovers and plans his next move in professional football.
