Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy confirmed his retirement from international football on Saturday, posting a video on Instagram that thanked the national team and highlighted his career with the Teranga Lions.
Mendy made his debut in 2018 under former coach Aliou Cissé and went on to earn 59 caps, conceding 34 goals and keeping 31 clean sheets. He played a pivotal role in Senegal’s historic 2021 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations triumph, when the Lions edged Egypt on penalties to claim their first continental title.
The former Al Ahli keeper also represented Senegal at two FIFA World Cups, in Qatar in 2022 and the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His departure marks the end of one of the most successful eras in Senegalese football history.
Individually, Mendy has been lauded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. He was named the best goalkeeper in Europe for the 2020‑21 season, won the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Best Goalkeeper award in 2021, and received the Best Goalkeeper honour at the 2022 The Best FIFA Football Awards.
