Coventry City return to Premier League after 25 years, open away to Arsenal

Frank Lampard's side kick off the new season at the Emirates on Friday, marking the Sky Blues' first top flight appearance since being relegated in 2001 — the longest gap between Premier League spells in the competition's history.

Coventry City will begin their long-awaited return to the Premier League on Friday, August 21, with a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in the season's opening fixture.

The Sky Blues, promoted after winning the Championship under manager Frank Lampard, are back in the top flight for the first time since being relegated in 2001, a gap of 25 years that stands as the longest absence between Premier League spells in the competition's history.

Coventry secured their return with three matches to spare, confirming promotion following a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers in April. They finished the Championship season strongly, with striker Haji Wright the club's top scorer during the promotion campaign.

Arsenal, who go into the new season among the favorites for the title, start as heavy favorites against their newly promoted opponents. But Coventry's rise from League Two to the Premier League in under a decade has been one of English football's notable turnaround stories, and Lampard has said reaching the top flight is only the beginning of the club's ambitions.

The match kicks off the 2026-27 Premier League season, with the rest of the division's 20 clubs following over the weekend.
