Minister for Local Government Mahama Ayariga told the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday that the final two and a half years of the Mahama administration are sufficient to turn around Ghana’s local government system.
He argued that most of the sector’s problems are organisational and can be addressed with improved coordination, leadership and effective management. “I believe that even though I have barely two and a half years, I believe that that is enough time to fix the system,” he said.
Ayariga highlighted the importance of strengthening local government to restore public confidence, noting that it is the level of government citizens interact with most frequently. He added that his experience across various sectors positions him to lead efforts with regional ministers and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to improve the system.
The minister also pointed out that significant resources exist at the local level but are not fully utilised to tackle sector challenges. His priority will be to improve coordination and make better use of existing resources to deliver more effectively at the local level.
As the Mahama administration approaches its final months, Ayariga remains optimistic that the reforms he champions will bring tangible improvements to local governance.
