President Bola Tinubu opened his 2027 presidential campaign at Ranchers Bees Stadium in Kaduna on Saturday, accusing opposition politicians of creating the hunger and poverty that Nigerians face. He insisted his administration is working to eliminate the problems and warned supporters to beware of opposition criticism, particularly of his decision to remove the petrol subsidy.

“I have heard the opposition talking about hunger and poverty. Who caused them? They did! They caused hunger and poverty. We are trying to eliminate them,” the president said. He added that the country would not return to the previous subsidy system, citing corruption, falsification of invoices and smuggling as reasons for the change.

In response, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, called Tinubu’s claim a “delusional, shameless attempt to dodge responsibility” for the misery his own government has inflicted on Nigerians. Atiku said a president cannot blame neighbours for the hardship he created with his policies.

Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu’s administration has implemented major economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange regime. Critics continue to demand evidence that the savings and revenue from the reforms translate into improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.

Vice President Kashim Shettima defended Tinubu’s political ties with northern Nigeria, highlighting the president’s support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Muhammadu Buhari. Shettima described Tinubu as a “Lion of Bourdillon,” noting his long‑standing backing of northern politicians.

The rally drew senior federal officials, APC governors, and party leaders, including Vice President Shettima, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume. APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and campaign director‑general Abdulaziz Yari were also present to mobilise support for the 2027 election.

As the APC seeks to consolidate its base ahead of the 2027 general elections, Tinubu urged Nigerians to give him another opportunity, promising continued pursuit of prosperity, development and national growth.
