Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga announced on Tuesday that the government will begin live streaming General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). The plan, developed in partnership with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), seeks to enhance transparency, accountability and citizen engagement in local governance.
In a Facebook post dated September 15, Ayariga said the programme aligns with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). He added that broadcasting local government proceedings would give citizens greater access to discussions and decisions at the local level, while allowing for increased public scrutiny of the work of MMDAs.
The minister also noted that the initiative is expected to generate greater public interest in the upcoming District‑Level Elections and encourage more citizens to participate actively in the decentralisation process. He said broader access to local government proceedings would help strengthen the relationship between citizens and local institutions and promote a more open system of governance.
“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions,” he said.
