Following Debibi United’s 1‑0 defeat to Bibiani GoldStars Petros in Matchday 7 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League, Chief Executive Officer Alexander Ababio publicly rebuked Greek coach Koukouras for comparing the club’s playing surface to a cassava field.

Speaking on Nhyira FM, Ababio called the coach’s statement reckless and unreasonable, questioning the logic behind likening the pitch to cassava cultivation in Greece. “If that’s how they grow cassava in his country, then I don’t know how they feed them,” Ababio said.

He urged Koukouras to focus on his professional duties instead of making what he deemed inappropriate comments, adding that the coach should stop saying “nonsense.”

The exchange comes amid broader discussions about the condition of football pitches in Ghana, with Petros among several foreign coaches who have voiced concerns about playing surfaces.

Debibi United, debutants in the Premier League, sit in the bottom three with seven points after eight games. They will host Hearts of Oak at the Debibi Presby Park on Sunday, with CEO Ababio stressing the club’s focus on staying in the top flight despite a poor start.
