Ashaiman, one of the Greater Accra Region’s most densely populated municipalities, is still grappling with a road network that has become a major source of frustration for residents, businesses and motorists. The major roads and several adjoining routes have deteriorated significantly, with potholes, muddy sections and stagnant water turning daily commutes into hazardous journeys, especially during the rainy season.
For years, residents have staged appeals and demonstrations, yet successive governments have promised improvements without delivering tangible results. The situation raises the uncomfortable question: how long must Ashaiman’s people wait for decent roads?
MP Ernest Norgbey of the National Democratic Congress has repeatedly raised the issue in parliament, urging the government to address the problem. With the NDC now in government and pledging significant investment in road infrastructure, residents expect tangible progress. However, neighbouring communities such as Tema have seen road projects and maintenance activities, making the contrast even more stark for Ashaiman.
While road construction requires planning, funding, engineering assessments and prioritisation, residents deserve a clear roadmap. Both the Member of Parliament and Municipal Chief Executive Freeman Tsekpo must engage the community openly, providing transparent information on planned projects and timelines. Representation should extend beyond elections to persistent advocacy, accountability and ensuring constituents’ concerns remain on the development agenda.
Ashaiman contributes significantly to the Greater Accra Region’s economy through work, trade and tax revenue. Poor roads cannot be a permanent feature of life in a municipality that supports the wider metropolitan area. The government must give Ashaiman’s road challenges the urgency they deserve, and the Municipal Assembly and political leadership must intensify efforts to secure and communicate a clear plan.
Residents have waited long enough. The question now is not whether Ashaiman needs better roads, but when they will finally get them.
