President John Dramani Mahama announced on Monday, 14 September 2026, that the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces would be conferred a national honour for completing the clearing of the Accra‑Kumasi Expressway route ahead of schedule. The regiment finished the 175.6‑kilometre clearing exercise in 19 weeks, one week before the 20‑week deadline set by the project.
During the ceremony where the Ghana Armed Forces handed over the cleared route to the government, President Mahama praised the unit’s efficiency, saying, “In 20 weeks, I’m pleased to announce to the whole country Ghana that our armed forces have accomplished this mission. One week ahead of schedule, they did it in 19 weeks.” The route runs from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, traversing forests, rivers and streams.
In recognition of their work, the President stated that the regiment would be honoured at the next national honours ceremony, which is expected to coincide with Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary celebrations. He added, “I have given instructions that at the next national honours, which we shall do to mark the 70th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Ghana, the engineers regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces shall receive an Order of the Companion of the Volta.”
The expressway project, covering 198.7 kilometres, is anticipated to provide a six‑lane connection between Accra and Kumasi, with the regiment’s clearing work seen as a critical preparatory step.
