The School of Journalism and Media Studies (SOJAMS) at UniMAC has teamed up with Northwestern University and Culture Beyond Borders to give students practical reporting experience in Ghana.
Northwestern students arrived on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and began the project the following day with a “Journalism Day” that set out assignments on topics ranging from fashion and food to Adinkra symbols and Fugu.
Students were split into mixed groups of one or two UniMAC members and Northwestern peers, who travelled to different sites to investigate and report. Each evening at 6 p.m. the teams reconvened to brief staff and share findings, a routine that continued through Thursday.
On Friday the cohort moved to Kumasi for another “Journalism Day,” and on Saturday they explored Kante Village to learn about Kente’s history and cultural impact. The group also visited Adinkra Village and the Palace Museum to deepen their understanding of Ghana’s heritage.
Sunday was reserved for reviewing and finalising the field work, after which the team headed to Cape Coast on Monday. There they covered the Last Bath River and Cape Coast Castle, documenting their historical and cultural significance.
Back in Accra on Tuesday, the students spent Wednesday finalising their pieces before presenting them to the Culture Beyond Borders team. The project wrapped up on Thursday, September 17, when the Northwestern delegation departed, while UniMAC students returned to campus.
Prof. Godwin Etsu Sikanku, Dean of SOJAMS, welcomed the partnership and urged students to seize the opportunity to gain real‑world experience that will prepare them for the media industry.
