The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has clarified that its threat to use all “legal action” to oppose the proposed private sector participation (PSP) in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) does not necessarily mean taking the government to court.
Deputy Secretary‑General Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo explained that the union’s reference to legal action includes the traditional industrial relations tools available to organised labour.
He said the TUC is not in the business of going to court to force the government to do something, but is prepared to use the legitimate mechanisms available to unions to advance its position on the proposed ECG PSP.
The disagreement between the TUC and the government over the proposed ECG PSP has intensified, with the union maintaining that the arrangement amounts to privatisation and vowed to block the World Bank‑backed plan.
Otoo added that the TUC’s “legal avenues” are the established industrial relations mechanisms that everyone knows of, rather than a courtroom confrontation.
What follows is a continued standoff as both sides prepare to use their respective tools in the battle over ECG’s future.
