From Saturday, September 26, 2026, passengers on Ghana’s private road transport will see fares climb by 8% following a deal struck between the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ministry of Transport. The adjustment comes after weeks of negotiations, during which the union had initially pushed for a 30% rise to cover escalating operational costs.
Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah explained that the union had been seeking an increase of at least 25% but accepted the lower figure after the government assured operators that further reductions in fuel prices were being pursued. Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, September 22, Mr Amoah said the union’s decision was driven by the expectation that fuel prices would drop in the next pricing window.
Operators are currently running at a loss, he added, but agreed to the 8% adjustment because of the anticipated fuel price relief. The union also weighed the broader impact of fare hikes on consumers and chose to accept the government’s assurance. However, Mr Amoah warned that the GPRTU would return to the Ministry of Transport if the promised fuel price reductions do not materialise. “It’s a promise given to us and if it fails, we will still go back to the ministry to let them know that the promise given to us has not been fulfilled,” he said.
Passengers can expect the new fares to take effect on September 26, with the Ministry of Transport monitoring the situation closely. The union has indicated that it will reassess the agreement if fuel prices remain high, potentially revisiting fare levels in future negotiations.
