Thirty‑seven inmates of Nsawam Medium Security Prison sat for the Teacher Licensure Examination on Monday, 14 September 2026, as part of the Ghana Prisons Service’s effort to use education for rehabilitation.
The exam was held inside the prison under strict supervision by two external invigilators, with assistance from Prisons Service officers, according to a Facebook post by the Service on 15 September.
All participants had already completed their degree programmes and now seek a professional qualification that could open teaching careers and other productive avenues after release.
The initiative reflects the Service’s broader commitment to equip inmates with knowledge and skills that support successful reintegration and enable them to contribute positively to society once their sentences are served.
Officials expect the new qualifications to improve the inmates’ chances of securing productive livelihoods and to aid their rehabilitation journey.
