The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Techiman South Constituency held a press briefing on September 21, 2026, demanding the immediate release of senior nursing officer Madam Salomey Awiti Bafoh, who has been remanded in police custody since September 13.
Communications Officer Mohammad Mukarram Abdallah addressed a large crowd of party faithfuls in red bands, chanting for the nurse’s freedom. The event underscored the constituency’s concern over what it described as a troubling abuse of state power.
Madam Salomey was taken from her home in Hansua, near Techiman, late at night on September 13. Her family struggled for days to learn her whereabouts and the reason for her arrest. Police allege she was involved in the publication and circulation of false news and assisted in redistributing content linked to the “Ghana Jollof” account. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Despite her lawyers’ application for bail, she remains remanded in police custody until September 30 while investigations continue. The NPP criticized the move of sending her to the Adentan Circuit Court, far from her home constituency, as deeply questionable.
Women’s Organizer Nana Akosua Sakyiwaa questioned why a mother of three was snatched away from her children for days without proper charges. Lawyer Amadu Berma Sulemana raised questions about the arrest procedure and the specific charges on the charge sheet.
Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and MP Hon. Martin Adjei‑Mensah Korsah joined the call for Madam Salomey’s immediate release. “This matter is no longer only about one nurse. It is about the protection of constitutional rights, the limits of state power, and the future of democracy in Ghana,” Mr. Abdallah declared.
The NPP issued nine pointed questions demanding answers from the government, calling for a review of the detention, granting of reasonable bail, full explanation of the circumstances, transparency on the role of National Security, respect for her constitutional rights, and assurance that no citizen will be intimidated for expressing a lawful opinion.
The press briefing concluded with a defiant message: “The NPP Techiman South Constituency will not remain silent while the rights and dignity of a constituent are placed at risk. We will not allow the people of Techiman South to be treated as though they have no voice.”
As the case continues, all eyes remain on the government’s next move and whether the calls for justice for Madam Salomey will be heeded.
