Agalga Plans Visit to Detained MP Frimpong Amid Dutch Extradition

Majority Leader James Agalga announced that he will visit the Netherlands to meet detained Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who is awaiting an extradition hearing. The trip will be scheduled once Agalga’s parliamentary workload eases, he said on JoyNews’ PM Express.

Frimpong was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on 10 May 2026 following a U.S. extradition request over alleged romance scams and money laundering. He has not been convicted, and two bail attempts have failed. His substantive extradition hearing is set for 18 November, according to Majority Chief Whip Rockson‑Nelson Dafeamekpor.

Agalga said he had been formally briefed on the matter and hoped the Dutch court applications would succeed. "We pray for our colleague that the applications that are currently before the court would come out favourably for him," he said.

He also highlighted the support from Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Brussels and the consular assistance confirmed by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Agalga stressed that Parliament must uphold the presumption of innocence, stating, "He's innocent until proven guilty." He rejected calls to declare Frimpong’s seat vacant, arguing that doing so would violate the MP’s rights.

Frimpong has denied reports of a transfer to the United States and remains in Dutch custody. The visit by Agalga is expected to provide firsthand information on the circumstances surrounding the MP’s detention.
