At a press briefing held at Jubilee House on Thursday, November 5, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama explained that Ghana’s decision to pursue a partnership with the BRICS bloc was first recommended by a ministerial committee established during the previous administration led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo.
He added that the proposal had already been before Cabinet when he assumed office and that his government merely reviewed and approved the recommendation. “We came and met their recommendation,” he said, noting that his administration did not set up the committee.
Mahama said the Cabinet subsequently assessed the proposal and agreed that participation as a BRICS partner would be beneficial. He rejected claims that the partnership marked a departure from Ghana’s foreign‑policy tradition, arguing that closer engagement with the bloc aligns with the country’s longstanding non‑aligned stance.
BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The President’s comments come as Ghana continues to navigate its role on the international stage while maintaining its policy of non‑alignment.
