At a town‑hall meeting in Tokyo, Japan, New Patriotic Party flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia urged the government to shift its strategy from trading gold to building Ghana’s gold reserves. He said the Bank of Ghana’s decision to sell part of its holdings resulted in losses of GH¢1.7 billion that could have been avoided if the Gold for Reserves programme had focused on accumulation rather than trading.
“If they had followed the way that we had wanted to do the Gold for Reserves programme in terms of accumulating reserves, those losses would not have been made. But once you decide to start trading in gold, you will make those losses,” Bawumia said.
He also defended his campaign focus on digitalisation ahead of the 2024 general elections, arguing that technology is now essential for economic growth and that countries must build digital infrastructure to remain competitive.
“Many people don’t understand that the world economy is now digital. If you don’t go digital, you cannot prosper in this global economy,” he added.
The NPP flagbearer warned that failure to adapt to a digital economy would leave Ghana behind its peers.
