The New Patriotic Party’s Russia Branch announced today that it has no affiliation with the “Lions of NPP” group or its founder, Dr. Abongo Mashood. The branch said Mashood has continued to present himself as the substantive NPP Russia Branch Chairman even after losing his position in the branch’s recent internal elections and the swearing‑in of new executives.
According to the branch, his continued use of the Russia Branch identity, especially in connection with the “Lions of NPP”, creates the impression that the group’s activities are backed by the party. The branch warned that the group’s vigilante‑style operations could have legal implications in Ghana.
In a statement dated September 19, 2026, the NPP Russia Branch clarified that it has neither sanctioned nor participated in the formation or activities of the “Lions of NPP”. It added that any interviews, statements, donations or communiqués issued by Mashood or the group should be treated as personal views and not as positions of the NPP Russia Branch.
The statement, signed by NPP Russia Branch Chairman Ebenezer Wepari and Deputy Branch Secretary Abubakari Yushawu, stressed that Mashood has no legal or constitutional mandate to speak on behalf of the branch following the conclusion of its internal elections.
The clarification came after the branch learned of media interviews and communiqués, particularly in the Upper East Region, in which the former chairman continued to identify himself as the NPP Russia Branch Chairman. The branch has urged the media, party members and the public to verify any statements with the current branch leadership before attributing them to the party.
