Beirut Cocaine Seizure: More Ghanaian Arrests Expected

Security analysts say Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) is poised to make a number of arrests following the seizure of 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine in Beirut, Lebanon. The drug was linked to a suspect who travelled from Accra on Middle East Airlines flight MEA 576.

The operation, described by analyst Richard Kumadoe as an intelligence‑led controlled delivery, aimed to identify and dismantle a wider drug‑trafficking network. Controlled delivery allows security agencies to monitor suspected traffickers and gather intelligence before making arrests to uncover other network members.

“When I saw controlled delivery, and I saw intelligence‑led, what I wanted to say is that I would not be surprised if NACOC would make a number of arrests in the coming days in Ghana,” Kumadoe said. He added that several individuals had been under surveillance following recent international drug‑trafficking operations, including the seizure in France, and that “before December, a number of arrests will be made.”

The General Directorate of Customs announced on Sunday, November 1, that the operation, carried out with the General Security on Saturday, October 31, led to the arrest of a passenger identified only by his initials, B.H. Customs officers discovered 40 packages of cocaine in his luggage, concealed using sophisticated methods and complex packaging designed to evade detection by scanning equipment.

Mr Kumadoe praised NACOC for its collaboration with other security agencies but urged sustained investigations, arrests and prosecutions, especially ahead of the festive season. He warned that stronger collaboration would make Ghana a hostile environment for international traffickers, either leading to arrest or a tip‑off.

With the seizure and the expected arrests, Ghana’s law‑enforcement agencies are tightening their net over drug trafficking networks, signalling a tougher stance ahead of the holiday period.
