Desmond Aggor Wins Four Awards at Volta GJA Ceremony

Desmond Selase Aggor, Volta Regional Correspondent for Citi FM and Channel One TV, took home four accolades at the 2026 Volta Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards held on Saturday, October 31. The ceremony, held in the Volta Region, saw Aggor adjudged Best in Education, Best in Sports, Best in Business and the prestigious GJA/Ras Muta Most Promising Journalist of the Year.

His Best in Education honor stemmed from a hard‑hit report on Zanukorfe, an island community in the North Dayi District. The piece exposed how a six‑unit classroom block, lacking basic amenities such as electricity and potable water, was staffed by only two teachers for pupils from Basic One to Basic Six. The story also highlighted the peril faced by children, including 10‑year‑old Mabel, who must cross the three‑kilometre‑wide River Volta in unsafe canoes without life jackets to attend school in neighbouring communities.

In the Sports category, Aggor’s investigation focused on the abandonment of the Youth Resource Centre and the poor condition of Ho Sports Stadium, arguing that these failures were stunting sports development and limiting opportunities for young talent in the region.

The GJA/Ras Muta Most Promising Journalist of the Year award, supported by a foundation in memory of the late Edem Divine Nyasorgbor – popularly known as Ras Muta – was presented to Aggor for his overall contribution to journalism. The foundation, founded by Ras Muta’s younger brother, aims to preserve his legacy and continue projects he envisioned, such as a modern toilet facility for Denu residents.

Aggor’s haul of four awards underscores the impact of investigative journalism in bringing regional challenges to national attention. The Volta GJA Awards continue to spotlight journalists who push for transparency and development across Ghana.
