Chief Justice Paul Baffoe‑Bonnie has been named chair of the newly formed 11‑member Board of the Council for Legal Education and Training (CLET). The board, which was unveiled today, brings together senior judiciary members, government officials and academics from Ghana’s leading law schools and tertiary institutions.
Representatives on the board include members from the judiciary, the ministries of justice and education, the tertiary education regulator and major law faculties. The composition is designed to provide comprehensive oversight of legal education and professional training across the country.
CLET is charged with supervising the Ghana School of Law and other regulatory functions related to legal education. The new board arrives as Ghana pushes forward reforms following the passage of the Legal Education Act.
The Ghana Bar Association had earlier urged the operationalisation of the Act and the creation of governing structures to give the reforms a solid institutional base. The inclusion of senior judicial officers, government representatives and academics is expected to strengthen oversight and implementation of the legal education framework.
Moving forward, the board will be tasked with developing and administering legal education and training in Ghana, ensuring that the reforms outlined in the Act are effectively carried out.
