Peter Lanchene Toobu, Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, called on lawmakers to increase recruitment and training for the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on Saturday, September 19, 2026. He said the agency’s current strength is below 2,000 and that this shortfall hampers Ghana’s ability to counter sophisticated drug trafficking networks.
The Wa West MP warned that Ghana must strengthen NACOC’s human resources and invest in technology and equipment. “We should get men and recruit more people and train them and deploy them effectively,” he told Citi News Digest. “They will help us to fight this menace.”
Toobu’s remarks come after French authorities seized 3.9 tonnes of suspected cocaine from a container shipped from Ghana. He said the seizure should prompt greater investment in agencies tasked with detecting and disrupting drug trafficking. “It’s no longer a joking matter. We are being stressed. Police are involved. BNI is involved. NACOC is playing the lead role. But they don’t have the numbers,” he added.
He urged Parliament to support NACOC with sufficient numbers, training and inter‑agency cooperation. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed‑Mubarak had earlier noted in July that NACOC operated in only 66 of Ghana’s 261 districts due to inadequate personnel and equipment, with a government plan to expand nationwide over five to six years.
NACOC has said its recent enforcement activities are intelligence‑led and disclosed that suspects linked to the 3.9‑tonne cocaine shipment had been under surveillance for one to two years before arrest.
