President John Dramani Mahama told motorists in Antigua that the recently launched TraffiTech‑GH system would automatically fine anyone who exceeds the 50km/h speed limit in towns. He said responsible drivers have nothing to fear from the technology.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Mahama said the cameras, deployed by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service on November 1, were necessary to curb road accidents caused by speeding. “If it is too expensive, then do not speed, and so there is a solution to that,” he said. “The maximum speed in town is 50km/h. However good the road is, you do the 50km/h. If you do that, you are fine, and you will not have to pay anything.”

Some motorists have questioned the rollout, arguing that the government should first address poor road conditions, faulty traffic lights, inadequate road markings and missing signage. Driver unions have also threatened industrial action over the system.

Mahama maintained that the condition of the roads should not prevent authorities from enforcing speed limits, pointing to the use of speed cameras in countries such as the United Kingdom.
