AMA Orders Traders to Vacate Unauthorized Bus Stops Within 48 Hours

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a 48‑hour notice to traders and hawkers occupying unauthorised bus stops across the city, directing them to cease trading and vacate the locations before an enforcement exercise begins.

In a press release dated Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Assembly instructed all traders operating at designated bus stops to immediately remove their belongings and stop trading in the affected areas.

The directive follows concerns raised by commercial drivers over the obstruction of designated stopping points, which the Assembly says affects vehicle and pedestrian movement and poses risks to public safety.

According to the AMA, the occupation of bus stops by hawkers contributes to traffic congestion and forces commuters to board and alight from vehicles at unsafe locations, increasing the risk of road accidents.

The Assembly noted that Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has already begun enforcement measures, including the removal of traders from unauthorised spaces at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota and parts of the Central Business District.

AMA warned traders to comply with the directive and refrain from conducting business in areas reserved for the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Enforcement will be intensified and those who disregard the directive will face action under the Assembly’s by‑laws.

Traders are also cautioned against returning to cleared locations, as reoccupation could attract further enforcement action, including prosecution.

The exercise is part of the Assembly’s efforts to maintain public order, improve road safety and ensure the proper use of public spaces across the metropolis.
