The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) marked its 70th anniversary on Tuesday with an inter‑directorate games event held at Paa Joe Stadium, KNUST. The day featured football, athletics, table tennis, volleyball, basketball and indoor games, drawing staff from all directorates, management and families to compete and mingle outside their usual work environments.
Dr. Yaw Opare Larbi, Deputy Medical Director and Chairman of the KATH 70th Anniversary Operational Committee, said the games were designed to bring staff together and foster stronger relationships across the hospital. “Activities such as this bring us together and we get to make new friends. And this is important for teamwork. It’s important for cohesion,” he said.
With more than 6,000 employees, KATH views such interaction as key to unity and improved teamwork. The event also carried a health‑promotion component, encouraging staff to exercise and become more conscious of their physical wellbeing.
Dr. Larbi noted that the anniversary celebrations began in December 2025 and will run throughout the year, with a range of community outreach programmes already underway. In Nkoranza, a multidisciplinary team of about 50 KATH health professionals joined local workers to install a new chief and queen mother, conduct health education and screening, and engage the public via radio.
Other planned activities include health screening, blood donation, a public lecture on KATH’s history and research dissemination, and a final Thanksgiving Service and Grand Durbar to recognise outstanding workers, followed by a dinner dance.
KATH CEO Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo highlighted that sports fit the hospital’s health mandate, noting the institution treated more than 364,000 patients in 2025 and continues to support medical education, research and the wider healthcare system. He also outlined infrastructure projects such as a Cardiac Catheterization Centre, redevelopment of an office complex and a multi‑floor pharmacy complex, aimed at expanding capacity for the next 70 years.
As the anniversary celebrations progress, KATH will use remaining activities to celebrate its history, honour staff and community contributions, and set the stage for its future.
