The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) announced that its monthly processing of temporary “DP” tickets has climbed to at least 15,000 vehicles, a steep increase from the previous peak of roughly 1,900 under the old system.
Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey said the surge followed a review of the temporary number plate system after he took office, which uncovered leakages and loopholes. He explained that the DVLA replaced reusable temporary plates with one‑time stickers, boosting the first month’s output to about 7,000 vehicles.
Further restructuring came after the discovery that 12 companies had been contracted to issue the temporary plates on behalf of the DVLA. Kotey said he cancelled all 12 contracts and employed contract staff to handle the project directly, a move that has pushed the monthly figure to at least 15,000 vehicles, the lowest number recorded under the new arrangement.
“As I speak with you now, the lowest number we’ve done is 15,000 per month,” Kotey told listeners on Starr FM on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The CEO also revealed that the DVLA is pursuing additional reforms to strengthen the security of vehicle number plates, citing concerns about the number of companies involved in embossing them.
