Dr Akwasi Oppong‑Fosu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairman hopeful, said on JoyNews that his decision to contest the party’s leadership race is motivated by a desire to offer substance rather than simply raise his political visibility.
Speaking Monday, September 21, the former Minister of Local Government explained that while some politicians enter leadership contests to increase their public profile, he has never been driven by a pursuit of the spotlight or personal glory.
He noted that his political journey spans more than four decades and that he has never chased front‑line seats or sought glory. “I’m not in for that. I’m not. If you watched my political journey, I don’t seek a spotlight,” he said, emphasizing that remaining outside the glare has been a deliberate choice rather than disengagement.
Oppong‑Fosu warned that “visibility without substance is just noise” and urged the NDC to focus on the ideas, experience and contribution candidates can bring. He said the party should not be concerned merely with how recognizable individuals are but with what they can offer the party.
He also suggested that political contests sometimes place excessive emphasis on appearance and public visibility rather than the underlying qualities and ideas of candidates.
As the NDC’s leadership race continues, Oppong‑Fosu’s candidacy is framed as a call for a more substantive, experience‑based approach to party leadership.
