Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said he fled from Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) officials on Wednesday after an attempt to take him to the agency. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, the MP explained the incident followed a court appearance and a media address.
A woman approached Baffour Awuah and informed him he was needed at EOCO. He said she held his wrist and he wriggled free. He offered to drive himself to the agency in his own car, but the woman insisted he could not use his vehicle and tried to escort him in an EOCO vehicle.
When Baffour Awuah asked for identification, the woman could not produce any. He said the lack of proof heightened his suspicion, describing the event as a possible kidnapping. "I will not sit in the car. I would rather sit in my car and now make sure that when EOCO is right ready to do the right thing, I will go there," he said.
The MP rejected claims that he was running from a lawful arrest, calling the attempt an unlawful arrest and a state‑sponsored kidnapping. He said seeking sanctuary at Parliament was justified, arguing that it protects him from kidnappers. "In fact, you seek sanctuary against kidnappers, and so if I’m seeking sanctuary, it is not wrong," he added.
EOCO said the attempted arrest was part of steps to secure Baffour Awuah’s attendance in an ongoing investigation. The agency noted the MP had been invited twice in February but did not honour the invitations. Baffour Awuah maintained that the invitation had not been properly made to him personally.
He concluded that any attempts to frustrate him would not change his position, stating, "When they are ready to do the right thing, I will go."
