Ghana’s former National Security Advisor, Ambassador Baba Issifu Kamara, celebrated his 70th birthday on 21 September 2026, with tributes highlighting his pivotal role in West African security and democracy.
Kamara, a seasoned diplomat who has served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria and as Permanent Representative to the ECOWAS Commission, was recently reappointed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government as Special Envoy on Counter‑Terrorism, a role he has held since July 2023.
In addition to his counter‑terrorism mandate, the 70‑year‑old statesman was named Head of Mission for the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission in Guinea‑Bissau ahead of the country’s general elections on 23 November 2025. His decision to remain in Bissau during a sudden military takeover—refusing early evacuation until a safe chartered flight could be arranged—underscored his commitment to the safety of the 130+ observers under his command.
Colleagues and observers praised Kamara as a “silent bridge builder” and “quiet broker of peace,” noting his expertise in peace, security, democracy and governance across West Africa. His career, spanning more than four decades, has seen him serve as Senior Presidential Advisor, National Security Advisor, and Deputy Head of the ECOWAS Observation Mission for Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential Elections.
Celebrations for the veteran diplomat included messages of gratitude from Ghanaian officials, ECOWAS members and international partners, all commending his integrity, wisdom and enduring legacy. The birthday event also highlighted his philanthropic work and mentorship, which have touched countless lives across the region.
