Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, head of the United Party, said the short window between his exit from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on 25 September 2023 and the 2024 general elections made it impractical to set up a new party from scratch. He chose to run for president under the Movement for Change, a political organisation that could legally field a candidate within the electoral framework.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on 21 September, Kyerematen noted that while he had intended to pursue a different political path, the time available was insufficient to organise a conventional party capable of competing in the December polls.
He added that the Movement for Change was not a fully established party at the time, but its philosophy and principles aligned with his own. “When I left the NPP, the time was too short to organise a full political party but to be able still to show up in the general election, you needed some kind of vehicle,” he said. “The important thing was about the principle underpinning that political vehicle.”
