Alexander Zverev, the German who will become the men’s world number one on Monday, was defeated in the Vienna Open semi‑final by Australian fifth seed Alex de Minaur. The match ended 4‑6 6‑1 6‑7 (4‑7) after a hard‑fought tie‑break in the third set.
De Minaur, who said he was “super proud with how I handled the situation,” described playing on his terms and swinging aggressively to secure the win. He added, “I was going to go out swinging and playing the right type of tennis, and that’s what made the difference today.”
After losing the first set, Zverev dominated the second, but neither player could force a break. De Minaur held his nerve in the decider, clinching the tie‑break and the match in just 2 h 30 min.
The victory propels the 27‑year‑old to the season‑ending ATP Finals, leapfrogging Spain’s Rafael Jodar in the qualification race. He will face Spanish second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the final, having beaten Daniil Medvedev in straight sets earlier.
Alcaraz’s win over Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev (6‑4 7‑6 (7‑2)) extends his unbeaten run at ATP 500 events to 25 matches, the longest since Holger Rune’s loss at the Barcelona Open in April 2025.
De Minaur will compete in his fourth final of the year, having previously claimed the Rotterdam Open title in February.
