In a formal petition sent to the Ministry of Transport, the Member of Parliament for Weija‑Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has called on Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe to station five dedicated Metro Mass Transit buses within the constituency. The MP outlined a plan to allocate three buses to the Weija‑to‑Accra route and two to the Gbawe‑to‑Accra route, citing persistent transport challenges that plague residents daily.
Shaibu highlighted rapid population growth in communities such as Weija, Gbawe, Tetegu and Oblogo, which has intensified commuter traffic and strained the existing public transport system. He noted that commuters routinely face long waiting times and overcrowded terminals, especially during peak morning and evening hours, making travel difficult for workers, traders, students and the elderly.
According to the MP, the situation is most acute along the Weija‑to‑Accra and Gbawe‑to‑Accra corridors, where thousands struggle to secure reliable transport to Accra and other economic hubs. He warned that the shortage of dependable public transport has pushed some residents toward unlicensed commercial vehicles and overloaded tricycles, heightening road safety risks.
Shaibu stressed that these transport woes are affecting residents’ productivity, safety and overall well‑being, and he urged urgent government intervention to improve services. “It is in light of the foregoing that I respectfully appeal to your good office to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to station five (5) dedicated buses within the Weija‑Gbawe Constituency as a matter of priority,” he said.
The MP’s appeal comes at a time when the Ministry of Transport is reviewing its fleet allocation strategy, and the response from Minister Nikpe will be closely watched by constituents and transport stakeholders alike.
