MP Peter Lanchene Toobu of Wa West celebrated the triumph of Alberta Mumaah, a student from Samombo Junior High School, who secured the Upper West Region’s only gold medal at the 35th National Basic School Sports Festival in Accra. Mumaah won the girls’ javelin throw, bringing national attention to the district.
Toobu praised the athlete for putting Wa West and the Upper West Region on the national map and pledged to support her education and sporting development. He announced that he would cover her school‑related and training expenses, provide three new javelins, and hand her GH¢2,000 to help her celebrate her achievement.
“I urge Alberta to pursue her education to the highest level while continuing to develop her talent in athletics,” Toobu said, encouraging other students in the district to identify and nurture their talents with discipline and commitment. He also expressed hope that Wa West could produce more athletes and footballers capable of representing Ghana internationally.
Deputy Regional Physical Education and Sports Coordinator Abdul Moomin Issahaque noted that the Upper West Region returned from the festival with several medals, but Mumaah’s gold was the only one for the region. He said her success demonstrated the potential of young athletes when given proper training and support.
Toobu will work with the District Education Directorate and other stakeholders to strengthen sports development in Wa West, urging teachers, parents and community leaders to encourage a balance of academics and sports. He believes that sports can play an important role in human development and create opportunities beyond the classroom.
The MP’s support for Mumaah and his broader commitment to sports development signal a renewed focus on nurturing talent in the Upper West Region, potentially paving the way for more national and international representation.
