On Friday, 18 September 2026, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Water and Sanitation visited the Ho Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) at Akrofu-Agorve in the Volta Region. The committee, led by Chairman and MP John Oti Bless, described the region as the cleanest area it had inspected so far during its two‑day tour of sanitation facilities in Volta and Oti.
During the visit, Mr Oti Bless listened to a presentation on waste collection, processing, recycling and the conversion of organic waste into compost. He said the trip was part of the committee’s oversight duty to assess waste‑management infrastructure and engage operators on sector challenges.
Ms Betty Brown Nyadu, Group Head of Government Relations for the Jospong Group of Companies, highlighted the poor road network leading to IRECOP as a major obstacle. She urged the government to build the access road and establish transfer stations nearer communities to encourage waste operators to bring waste to the plant instead of dumping it in forests and farms.
Ms Nyadu also called for policy support to create a reliable market for materials produced from processed waste, noting that about 60 percent of the plant’s intake is organic and could be turned into compost or organic fertiliser for local agriculture.
Mr Oti Bless assured the Jospong Group that the committee would include the concerns raised in its report to Parliament. He specifically mentioned the road issue and the need for transfer stations, adding that the committee would engage the Ministry of Roads and Highways and other relevant authorities.
The chairman reaffirmed the committee’s backing for the proposed National Sanitation Authority Bill, citing widespread support from sanitation stakeholders for a dedicated authority to strengthen national sanitation management. The two‑day monitoring exercise will continue in the Volta Region before moving to the Oti Region.
