The incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, trapping the victims underground.
According to the Assembly Member for the area, Isaac Kyei Andoh, residents alerted him shortly after the pit collapsed, leading to an immediate effort to rescue those trapped.
The victims comprised two women and a man, all aged between 21 and 25 years.
Two of the deceased women were reportedly residents of nearby Bomeriso.
Mr Andoh said the victims were involved in illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, and had been digging deep pits with makeshift equipment in search of gold.
The rescue operation was completed later in the evening, with the bodies recovered between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The bodies were subsequently conveyed to the mortuary after the necessary customary rites had been performed at the scene.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with unregulated mining activities, particularly the use of unstable and makeshift underground pits.
Authorities and communities across mining areas have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety risks posed by illegal mining, with pit collapses continuing to claim lives.
The deaths at Odumase-Santenso add to the growing number of fatalities associated with unsafe illegal mining operations in Ghana.
