On Sunday, October 25, the people of the Klikor Traditional Area in Ghana’s Volta Region formally installed and swore in Dr Frank Hukporti, known as Torgbiga Addo IX, as their new Paramount Chief. The ceremony followed the passing of his predecessor, Torgbiga Addo VIII, who led the area from 1983 until his death on January 14, 2026, at the age of 93.

Chief Addo VIII, who also served as President of the Klikor Traditional Council, was laid to rest on Saturday, October 24 after a week of traditional funeral rites. His 43‑year reign was noted for a strong focus on education, with basic schools established throughout the area and the founding of Klikor Secondary Technical School, where he was the first headmaster.

In a media engagement before the installation, Torgbiga Addo IX reflected on his predecessor’s legacy, emphasizing education and community development. The new chief, a German‑trained educationist and distinguished musicologist, has pledged to build on these achievements, prioritising tertiary education and the establishment of a university in the Ketu South Municipality.

He also highlighted urgent infrastructure needs, including road improvements linking Klikor to neighbouring communities such as Agbozume and Aflao. The Paramount Chief, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and former Director of Bands of the Ghana Police Service, holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Bayreuth and is credited with pioneering the concept of “Musical Domestication.”

During the ceremony, several traditional rulers from the region were present, including Togbiga Afede XIV of Asogli State, Torgbiga Tenge Dzokoto VII of Anyako, and Torgbiga Adamah III of Agbozume, among others. The new chief has outlined a long‑term vision to transform Klikor into a modern city while seeking UNESCO recognition for its historic shrines.

As Klikor is one of the oldest Ewe settlements and a spiritual centre, the installation of Torgbiga Addo IX marks a significant moment for the community, which is predominantly peasant farmers and kente weavers. The announcement was issued by the chiefs, elders and people of the Klikor Traditional Area in the Ketu South Municipality.
