The Accra Circuit Court Eight has remanded four individuals accused of illegal sand winning at Teacher Mantey, a suburb of Amasaman, for a hearing on September 24, 2026.
The accused—Kofi Atiemo, 38; Ebenezer Tetteh Gyablatey, 32; John Hayford, 48; and Ebenezer Kwafo, 31—are all residents of Teacher Mantey. Atiemo and Gyablatey are unemployed, while Hayford and Kwafo work as drivers.
They face charges of conspiracy to engage in illegal sand winning and unlawful damage to crops. The four denied the allegations and will appear again on the scheduled date.
Defense counsel applied for bail, but the prosecution opposed the move, arguing that the offences are serious and the accused are likely to abscond if released. The presiding judge accepted the prosecution’s concerns and remanded the men.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Issah Achiburi presented the case, noting that the complainants, businessman Francis Okah and Prince Annor, received reports from their land caretakers that the accused had entered their properties with heavy equipment to extract sand. Okah owns 4.5 acres; Annor owns two plots. The alleged activity damaged Okah’s fence wall and Annor’s vegetation crops.
Investigations revealed that the accused used a wheel loader and two tipper trucks—registration numbers GN-9145-2 and GN-6778-Z—to transport sand to an unknown destination. CCTV footage from a nearby residence captured the men allegedly winning and moving sand from Annor’s land.
Prosecutors identified Atiemo as the alleged mastermind behind the operation. Police are continuing their inquiry and are working to apprehend other alleged accomplices.
Authorities will review the case again on September 24, 2026, when the accused are expected to reappear in court.
