British‑Ghanaian hip‑hop pioneer Sway DaSafo, born Derek Safo, has died at the age of 44. The MOBO Awards released a statement early today confirming the loss of the artist who once broke the UK Top 10 as an unsigned act and later mentored the likes of KSI.
Safo, who grew up in Hornsey, north London to Ghanaian parents, carved a niche with a versatile flow that spanned grime, club anthems and reflective hip‑hop. He first emerged with the groups Phynix Crew and One before launching a solo career that saw the 2006 hit “Little Derek” enter the UK Top 40 and the debut album This Is My Demo earn a four‑star Guardian review and a MOBO award for best hip‑hop act.
After signing with Akon’s Konvict Music, he released the 2008 album The Signature LP, and later produced chart‑topping singles such as “Ride on Time” (2011) and “Level Up” (2012). His collaborations spanned the spectrum, from Riz Ahmed and Ed Sheeran to American rappers Lupe Fiasco and Chamillionaire, and he even featured on Kaiser Chiefs’ third album.
Beyond his own releases, Safo nurtured emerging talent through his Dcypha Productions label, playing a key role in launching KSI’s music career. He and his wife Helen had four children, and a recent social media post described him as a single father.
The cause of death has not yet been announced. The music community mourns the loss of a figure who championed independence and storytelling in UK rap.
