At Snapchat’s California headquarters, Evan Spiegel told the BBC that the company would be "willing to implement" daily time limits for teens, a move that could echo Meta’s recent settlement with U.S. states. The comments came as Snap unveiled new Specs smart‑glasses, which it said could connect to Apple iPhones and Macs.
Meta has been pressuring other social media firms to adopt similar restrictions, following a $12.7 billion settlement that includes a two‑hour daily limit for teen users across its platforms and other measures such as muted notifications during school hours. The settlement also threatens an additional $5.3 billion if YouTube and TikTok comply.
Spiegel said setting a maximum amount of time that young users can spend on the app would be "an important step forward for the industry." He added that Snap already offers Family Centre tools that let parents monitor how teens use the platform.
While the CEO did not commit to a timeline, he said the idea of a default limit was something the company would be willing to explore. "That's something we've talked about internally," he said. "I don't have more to share today."
Snap’s new Specs glasses will use AI to suggest activities based on users’ goals, relationships and routines. The lightweight, 130‑gram device will overlay digital elements onto the real world and retail at $2,195 in the U.S. and £1,995 in the U.K.
Snap has built a white light indicator into the glasses to show when video or photo capture is in progress, a feature designed to address privacy concerns that have plagued Meta’s own smart‑glasses line.
As Snap considers policy changes, the company will likely weigh the impact on user experience and regulatory expectations. Stakeholders will watch for any announcement on when, or if, the platform will roll out teen usage limits.
