In Ejura Sekyedumasi, parents are finding relief as Member of Parliament Bawah Muhammed Braimah distributes essential school supplies to students preparing to enter senior high school. The initiative, part of the Free SHS scheme, aims to cover items that parents often cannot afford, such as metal trunks, mattresses, pillows and exercise books.
Regina Appiah, a local mother, said she had struggled to buy the required items for her son. “I cannot afford these items. I do not have the money,” she told local reporters. The MP’s package has helped her meet some of the costs, and she believes the support will allow her child to continue his education. “These items will help secure my child’s future. I will be able to enrol my child in school, and I believe he will become great in the future, for me and for the country,” she added.
Franklina Sarpong, another resident, expressed gratitude for a trunk, chop box, mattress, books and other necessities she received. “Now I can manage the little money I have and use it to buy some of the smaller things my child needs,” she said, noting that providing everything for school had been difficult for her family.
Mr Braimah explained that the programme targets 500 students this year, selecting those who scored between six and nine on the national aggregate as well as the best performers in their schools. “We know that we have Free SHS education, but when it is time for children to go to school, most parents are unable to provide them with the necessary items on the school prospectus,” he said. He added that the complete set of supplies is worth more than GH¢1,000 and hopes the support will motivate students to study harder.
The initiative has been welcomed by parents who see the tangible impact on their children’s readiness for secondary education. The MP hopes similar support will continue in future years, with the District Chief Executive and other community leaders also expressing support.
As the Free SHS programme covers tuition, the MP’s effort addresses the gap in basic supplies that still hinders many families from enrolling their children in senior high school. The hope is that with these resources, students can focus on learning rather than financial worries.
