Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the defence lawyer for Salomey Awiti Baffoe, the nurse charged with abetting the spread of false news in the “Ghana Jollof” saga, announced that an appeal will be filed against the Accra High Court’s decision to deny bail on Thursday, September 24.
The court rejected the application after the prosecution argued that Ms Baffoe was still needed to assist ongoing investigations, citing cyber‑related evidence and a perceived risk of witness interference.
Mr Baffour said the police charge sheet shows investigations concerning Ms Baffoe herself are complete, and that the remaining work focuses on third parties allegedly redistributing videos. He questioned how Ms Baffoe could interfere with information when her mobile phones had already been seized and accessed by police.
He added that the defence believes the court failed to consider vital documentary evidence before exercising its discretion. “We disagree with the decision, even though we respect it,” he said.
The lawyer confirmed that the family has instructed the legal team to take all necessary steps to secure Ms Baffoe’s liberty, and that an appeal will be lodged. He also plans to petition the Chief Justice to allow the Court of Appeal to sit, even during vacation, to deal with the urgent matter of Ms Baffoe’s freedom.
Mr Baffour highlighted the impact of the detention on Ms Baffoe’s three minor children, noting that her 15‑year‑old son has been unable to attend Form One classes. He said the defence will seek an expedited hearing, arguing the record is not voluminous and can be processed quickly.
“We are going to do everything within our power and in accordance with the law to ensure that the liberty of Madam Salome Awiti Baffoe is secured,” he concluded.
The outcome of the appeal and any petition to the Chief Justice will determine whether Ms Baffoe remains in custody or is released pending further proceedings.
