Former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini has demanded a comprehensive review of Ghana’s port inspection regime after the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) was reportedly withdrawn from port inspections. Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Fuseini questioned how large quantities of narcotics could slip through Ghana’s borders undetected.
He cited the recent seizure by French customs of almost 3.9 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a container of plastic waste that arrived at Dunkirk from Ghana. Four individuals have been remanded in Ghana over the alleged export of the consignment, and investigations are ongoing.
Fuseini said the system’s failure began surfacing around 2023 or 2024 when NACOC was removed from port inspection duties. "The question is, how did the drugs come into this country in the first place?" he asked. He called for investigators to determine whether weaknesses or facilitators within the system enabled the narcotics to enter and move through Ghana.
He highlighted that port security involves several institutions, including Customs, the Plant Quarantine Unit, and drug enforcement authorities. "Every agency has a role to play. Ministry of Agriculture, Plant Quarantine Unit has a role to play at the port. Customs, Excise and Preventive Service, as part of the agency under the Ghana Revenue Authority, has a role to play," he said. "The Drug Enforcement Authorities have roles to play. So we need to look at the whole regime and ensure that people are playing their part."
Fuseini’s comments come amid growing concerns over the movement of drugs through Ghanaian ports and the need for a coordinated, multi‑agency response to curb illicit trafficking.
